Memphis, Tennessee (1954) ,

From "Overton Park"

... the brighthot sun/ spreading beneath the trees invades the ballwashers in the shade:  / the brown grass sloping in swales to shimmering sand.../ bound by St. Augustine.

(1966)

From "Basic Training"

"Get in line, get in line,
You have to do the ladder, boy,/ To eat." The officers and NCOs/ Returned from Nam, blink,/ Stare and sigh, anesthetized/ By the smell of blood./"Medic," the NCOIC says calmly,/ As in a dream, "Someone,/ "Someone get a medic."

From "The New River,

"

... I step where he has stepped/ Not to disturb the fragile earth,/ black and crumbly/ Beside the stream, not to disturb the hush/ Of the river’s/ edge where it meets lea water/ And bright round pebbles in the sun./ I watch the deer./  I step into the still water...

Words and Images

Poetry

From "Friendship"

After the storm,/ the mountain pine/ lays down its burden of snow.

From "The Sea at Kamakura"

When the pale sun sank beyond Ise,/ and the heat, and the city sounds,/ I walked the heavy streets alone, / below the town, beside the bay,/ to smell the wet sand, taste the air ...

Letters & Essays

From "An Open Letter
to Aspiring Writers"

The two biggest problems most writers have are (1) not being aware that writing is, indeed, a thinking process, and not merely a mechanical processing of words, phrases, and sentences into computers and onto sheets of paper, and (2) conflating the writing process into one big bewildering activity that starts in chaos and ends less happily than one would have liked.

From "Revising Education"

I am not talking about "America's future," children doing what children do best (having fun growing up "naturally"), nor am I talking about “the farmers,” who have been coaxed (or forced) into doing other things beside teaching ... I am talking about the human asset that is the pride in oneself that comes from living up to one's true potential, Aristotle's entelechy.   I am talking about self-respect and the habit of excellence.

From "The Methods and Purposes of Discourse"

There are methods of writing and purposes of writing. A method is one thing, as we all know, and a purpose is something else. Nevertheless, in writing circles these two quite different things have frequently been confused, from time to time causing great consternation among teachers of writing, and sometimes pedagogical and ever political disputes, and confusion, despair, and animosity among students of writing.

Guest Lecturers

Aristotle, "On Friendship"

" ... there are three main reasons why one person might like someone else ... One might like someone because he is good, or because he is useful, or because he is pleasant. And so there are three bases for friendships, depending on which of these qualities binds friends together."

Jose Ortega y Gasset, "Choosing to be Excellent"

"Nobility is defined by the demands it makes on us—by obligations, not by rights."

Cao Xueqin, "Girls in Their Summer Dresses"

"Reminders of my poverty were all about me: the thatched roof, the wicker lattices, the string beds, the crockery stove. But these did not need to be an impediment to the workings of the imagination."

Jose Ortega y Gassett, "Learned Ignorance"

"The specialist 'knows' very well his own tiny corner of the universe; he is radically ignorant of all the rest."
